How Much Ham per Person? (USDA Serving Guide)
Plan on ¼ to ⅓ pound of boneless ham per person, or ⅓ to ½ pound of bone-in ham per person. The calculator multiplies the USDA serving range by your guest count and rounds up to the next quarter pound so the shopping estimate does not fall below the selected range.
Example for 12 guests
| Ham cut | USDA allowance | Calculation | Amount to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boneless | ¼–⅓ lb per person | 12 × ¼–⅓ lb | 3–4 lb |
| Bone-in | ⅓–½ lb per person | 12 × ⅓–½ lb | 4–6 lb |
These are planning estimates, not a food safety rule. Choose toward the upper end if you want leftovers or expect larger portions. For cooking and reheating temperatures, see ham cooking time.
If you plan to keep leftovers
FSIS storage guidance depends on the ham's form: cooked ham sold whole and store-wrapped keeps refrigerated for 7 days; a store-wrapped half or slices, and spiral ham, keep 3–5 days. The freezer range for these cooked-ham types is 1–2 months for quality. Check the ham storage chart for the row matching the label and packaging.
